  • Kucukcekmece

History of Kucukcekmece, Kucukcekmece is an important region that forms the origin of life in Istanbul.

Research by many geologists and anthropologists shows that the region has a very ancient history and that people lived here in prehistoric times.

The finds found in the Yarimburgaz Caves, located in the north of Kucukcekmece Lake, show that people made a living by fishing and hunting in the prehistoric period of Istanbul.

On the peninsula to the north of Kucukcekmece Lake, there are many building ruins and walls that are thought to belong to the Hellenistic - Late, Roman - Byzantine periods.

According to written sources, the area where these structures are located is thought to be the ancient city called "Bathonea", which existed in the Hellenistic period.

Kucukcekmece is strategically located connecting Istanbul to the western regions and Europe, and has been the target of many raids and attacks throughout history, including Huns, Avars, Pechenegs, Bulgarians, and Crusaders.

Kucukcekmece, which came under Turkish rule just before the conquest of Istanbul, was rebuilt by Fatih Sultan Mehmet by repairing its roads and bridge.

The town, which took the name "Cekme-i Kucuk" Kucuk-Cekme’’, became an important place of accommodation by being equipped with mosques, madrasahs, inns, baths and fountains.

Kucukcekmece, which is administratively connected to the Haslar district, was developed by Abdusselam Celebi, the Chief Treasurer of Yavuz Sultan Selim and Suleiman the Magnificent.

In 1865, it was connected to the Bab-ı Police Administration and according to the State Yearbook in 1877, it is recorded that Istanbul was divided into 4 governorships: Uskudar, Beyoglu, Kaza-ı Erbaa and İzmit.

Kucukcekmece was part of the Kaza-ı Erbaa, and this kaza included Buyukcekmece, Silivri, Terkos, and Kucukcekmece.

In 1878, Kucukcekmece began to be administered by Sehremaneti - Istanbul Municipality.

Kucukcekmece, which existed as a village connected to the Yesilkoy district in the first years of the Republic, became the center of the township in 1956.

In 1981, it was connected to Istanbul Municipality by incorporating the municipalities of Avcilar, Halkali and Sefakoy.

Kucukcekmece went down in history as a district established with the Law No. 3392 published in the Official Gazette dated July 04, 1987.

It was officially put into service on July 15, 1988.
